The CNMV falls under the remit of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Spain.
Established in 1988, the CNMV is one of the oldest financial regulators. It was established after Law 24/1988 was passed – this law was also known as the Stock Market Act. The Securities Market Law (Law 37/1998) updated the previous law and helped establish a stronger regulatory framework.
As Spain is a member of the European Union, the financial regulatory framework as adopted by the CNMV must be in compliance with EU standards. In general the purpose of the CNMV is to ensure stability and transparency is achieved in Spain financial services markets.
