London Stock Exchange features
The London Stock Exchange was founded in 1773 and was previously known as the Stock Exchange of Great Britain and Ireland. By 1973 it was renamed the London Stock Exchange. The LSE is one of the most prominent financial institutions in the United Kingdom. It plays two primary roles: the first is to assist new firms in selling shares in order to raise capital (primary market), and the second is to bring together those who wish to buy and those who wish to sell shares (secondary market).
The London Stock Exchange is also one of many financial institutions around the world that are part of capital markets. Capital markets play a crucial role in assisting businesses to raise funds for research, development, expansion and starting up. They trade financial securities and are composed of both primary and secondary markets.
The LSE has a market capitalization of around US$3.74 trillion, and is considered to be the fourth largest stock exchange in the world, and the largest in Europe. The London Stock Exchange is the most international of all stock exchanges, and features 350 companies from more than 50 countries. It primarily deals with larger sized companies, as sole traders are unlikely to have anything to do with the LSE.
The London Stock Exchange provides the most up to date benchmark prices and market data in Europe. It has strong partnerships with Asian and African international exchanges.
