Hedge funds explained

A hedge fund is a pooled investment that involves a number of investors entrusting their money to a fund manager. In doing so, the fund manager’s role is to invest in various traded securities with the intention of making absolute returns on trades.

A hedge fund manager uses alternative investment strategies in comparison with traditional market trading, including investment against market falls, investment in assets they see as below their true value, and a reliance on arbitrage and leverage.

The purpose of a hedge fund is to limit volatility by using a range of strategies, including the use of derivatives. Hedge fund managers invest in a number of securities to garner maximum returns, and therefore the fund manager is given a great deal of responsibility in producing positive returns.

Despite creating an opportunity to make maximum returns, hedge funds are known for being fairly high-risk, particularly because they are unregulated. Nevertheless, hedge funds can often produce positive results in poor market conditions, but are generally reserved for the very wealthy.
